Pulp Fiction Vs. Kill Bill - 1694 Words
Pulp Fiction Vs. Kill Bill I was a little late on the Kill Bill train and did not watch the movie until last year. As soon as the film started, I knew that it was going to be extremely intense. The same goes for Pulp Fiction. These two films directed by Quentin Tarantino were very different from all the other films that Iââ¬â¢ve seen in my life. The mise en scene, dialogue, and music, were all different factors that intrigued me. I watched Pulp Fiction after watching Kill Bill and at first I thought that Pulp Fiction was an odd spin off to Kill Bill or that it took place in the same kind of universe because the worlds are so similar, the characters are just as intense, and the amount of violence was just as common. These are just a few things that make Pulp Fiction and Kill Bill similar. In this essay I will be discussing more similarities and slight differences between the two films. Therefore, it is important that from early childhood, parents work towards effectively building and understanding emotions as this makes it easy for them in their later lives, to control or express emotions. Winter Dreams free essay sample
His successes were completely self-made yet; he had issues when it comes to dealing with the matters of the heart. But this trait showed more and more that Dexter is indeed human and in all of F. Scott Fitzgeraldââ¬â¢s work, his central focus was always about the people in his story. His work concentrated on their development from page 1 introduction to them all the way to the end where we can see their triumphs and tragedies that befall upon them. Dexter, the hero of our tale seems to be a man with a steadfast resolve to do whatever he put his mind to. However, the winter season seem to be his deciding judge on what he needs to do. Often we see that the seasonal changes in nature bring us a different perspective and Fitzgerald uses this as a vehicle of Dexterââ¬â¢s personality and character. The season change for him is an ever-looming specter in his mind and affect how he makes his decisions in life. We will write a custom essay sample on Winter Dreams or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page I hope that in the course of this paper, you will find the correlation between Dexter and how he uses the seasonal changes especially the winter as a deciding factor of his decision. Sincerely, Jay Schwanke Jay Schwanke Professor Coleman ENGL 200 12 April 2013 F. Scott Fitzgerald and ââ¬Å"Winter Dreamsâ⬠One of the most important things that can be seen in Fitzgeraldââ¬â¢s work including Winter Dreams is the character development of our ââ¬Å"heroâ⬠, Dexter. He is the central character that the story rallies behind. We see from the start that the setting of this story is very vital to how he behaves and how he sees himself in the world. The season of winter is indicative of how his mood dictates his behavior. Dexter hated the winter because it drags his mood to the ground. As a caddy, the warm spring and hot summers brings him business and allowed him to flourish in his money making endeavor. For him the winter brings dream of prosperity and a brighter future, even though his father did own a thriving business, the money made him independent of those around him including his family. Each winter, he only dream of the spring and summer where he imagined time after time winning the golf game against the club pro (Page 71). This revelation shows us Dexterââ¬â¢s desire to be something different that others are made from a different mold. Yet, he was willing to walk away from his caddying in order to prove a point to others around him. When Dexter makes up his mind, he sticks with it no matter what the outcome will be but again, those decisions are often dictated by the season of winter. ââ¬Å"â⬠¦It is not so simple as that either. As so frequently would be the case in the future, Dexter was unconsciously dictated to by his winter dream. Dexter is a man with steady resolve to what ever he decided to do. It all started when he quit his job as a caddy, then attending college and finally settled into a career made by his own design. Yet another of his winter dream comes to its fruition. As a caddy during the winter as he stared out in to the snow, he envisioned himself playing golf on the very same course, but this time, he will be looked upon with respect as he is now, a self made man with successes . So once again, his winter dream as a youth comes to reality. Yet when it comes to his relationship with Judy, those dreams never existed during his winter dreams. That reality was born out of season for him; therefore I can understand how negative and badly it went. His whole relationship with her was completely against his nature of using the season to dictate the direction of his life. So I think the failure came because he didnââ¬â¢t follow his seasonal directions that he was constantly referring his lifeââ¬â¢s decision to. Even after Judy coming back the second time, things has changed so much for Dexter. It went all the way to the end when they finally grew apart and found out later on that she was no longer the Judy of his winter dreams, Dexter still could not or was not able to process that into any emotions. Dexter was no longer the same Dexter as he once was. I think the winter dreams of having it all to include the love of his life Judy faded away just like the winter faded into spring. Armament Guns: 13 Ãâ" .50 in (12.7 mm) M2 Browning machine gunsBombs: 4,500-8,000 lbs. depending on range B-17 Flying Fortress- Design Development: Seeking an effective heavy bomber to replace the Martin B-10, the U.S. Army Air Corps (USAAC) issued a call for proposals on August 8, 1934. Requirements for the new aircraft included the ability to cruise at 200 mph at 10,000 ft. for ten hours with a useful bomb load. While the USAAC desired a range of 2,000 miles and top speed of 250 mph, these were not required. Eager to enter the competition, Boeing assembled a team of engineers to develop a prototype. Led by E. Gifford Emery and Edward Curtis Wells, the team began drawing inspiration from other company designs such as the Boeing 247 transport and XB-15 bomber. Constructed at the companys expense, the team developed the Model 299, which was powered by four Pratt Whitney R-1690 engines and was capable of lifting a 4,800 lb. bomb load. For defense, the aircraft had five mounted machine guns. This imposing look led Seattle Times reporter Richard Williams to dub the aircraft the Flying Fortress. Seeing the advantage to the name, Boeing quickly trademarked it and applied to the new bomber. On July 28, 1935, the prototype first flew with Boeing test pilot Leslie Tower at the controls. With the initial flight a success, the Model 299 was flown to Wright Field, Ohio for trials. At Wright Field, the Boeing Model 299 competed against the twin-engined Douglas DB-1 and Martin Model 146 for the USAAC contract. Competing in the fly-off, the Boeing entry displayed superior performance to the competition and impressed Major General Frank M. Andrews with the range that a four-engine aircraft offered. This opinion was shared by the procurement officers and Boeing was awarded a contract for 65 aircraft. With this in hand, development of the aircraft continued through the fall until an accident on October 30 destroyed the prototype and halted the program. B-17 Flying Fortress- Rebirth As a result of the crash, Chief of Staff General Malin Craig cancelled the contract and purchased aircraft from Douglas instead. Still interested in the Model 299, now dubbed YB-17, the USAAC utilized a loophole to purchase 13 aircraft from Boeing in January 1936. While 12 were assigned to the 2nd Bombardment Group for developing bombing tactics, the last aircraft was given to the Material Division at Wright Field for flight testing. A fourteenth aircraft was also built and upgraded with turbochargers that increased speed and ceiling. Delivered in January 1939, it was dubbed B-17A and became the first operational type. B-17 Flying Fortress- An Evolving Aircraft Only one B-17A was built as Boeing engineers worked tirelessly to improve the aircraft as it moved into production. Including a larger rudder and flaps, 39 B-17Bs were built before switching to the B-17C, which possessed an altered gun arrangement. The first model to see large-scale production, the B-17E (512 aircraft) had the fuselage extended by ten feet as well as the addition of more powerful engines, a larger rudder, a tail gunner position, and an improved nose. This was further refined to the B-17F (3,405) which appeared in 1942. The definitive variant, the B-17G (8,680) featured 13 guns and a crew of ten. B-17 Flying Fortress- Operational History The first combat use of the B-17 came not with the USAAC (U.S. Army Air Forces after 1941), but with the Royal Air Force. Lacking a true heavy bomber at the start of World War II, the RAF purchased 20 B-17Cs. Designating the aircraft Fortress Mk I, the aircraft performed poorly during high-altitude raids in the summer of 1941. After eight aircraft were lost, the RAF transferred the remaining aircraft to Coastal Command for long-range maritime patrols. Later in the war, additional B-17s were purchased for use with Coastal Command and the aircraft was credited with sinking 11 u-boats. B-17 Flying Fortress- Backbone of the USAAF With the United States entrance into the conflict after the attack on Pearl Harbor, the USAAF began deploying B-17s to England as part of the Eighth Air Force. On August 17, 1942, American B-17s flew their first raid over occupied Europe when they struck railroad yards at Rouen-Sotteville, France. As American strength grew, the USAAF took over daylight bombing from the British who had switched to night attacks due to heavy losses. In the wake of the January 1943 Casablanca Conference, American and British bombing efforts were directed into Operation Pointblank, which sought to establish air superiority over Europe. Key to the success of Pointblank were attacks against the German aircraft industry and Luftwaffe airfields. While some initially believed that the B-17s heavy defensive armament would protect it against enemy fighter attacks, missions over Germany quickly disproved this notion. As the Allies lacked a fighter with sufficient range to protect bomber formations to and from targets in Germany, B-17 losses quickly mounted during 1943. Bearing the brunt of the USAAFs strategic bombing workload along with the B-24 Liberator, B-17 formations took shocking casualties during missions such as the Schweinfurt-Regensburg raids. Following Black Thursday in October 1943, which resulted in the loss of 77 B-17s, daylight operations were suspended pending the arrival of a suitable escort fighter. These arrived in early 1944 in the form of the North American P-51 Mustang and drop tank-equipped Republic P-47 Thunderbolts. Renewing the Combined Bomber Offensive, B-17s incurred much lighter losses as their little friends dealt with the German fighters. Though German fighter production was not damaged by Pointblank raids (production actually increased), B-17s aided in winning the war for air superiority in Europe by forcing the Luftwaffe into battles in which its operational forces were destroyed. In the months after D-Day, B-17 raids continued to strike German targets. Strongly escorted, losses were minimal and largely due to flak. The final large B-17 raid in Europe occurred on April 25, 1945. During the fighting in Europe, the B-17 developed a reputation as an extremely rugged aircraft capable of sustaining heavy damage and remaining aloft. B-17 Flying Fortress- In the Pacific The first B-17s to see action in the Pacific was a flight of 12 aircraft that arrived during the attack on Pearl Harbor. Their expected arrival contributed to the American confusion just prior to the attack. In December 1941, B-17s were also in service with the Far East Air Force in the Philippines. With the beginning of the conflict, they were quickly lost to enemy action as the Japanese overran the area. B-17s also took part in the Battles of Coral Sea and Midway in May and June 1942. Bombing from high altitude, they proved unable to hit targets at sea, but were also safe from Japanese A6M Zero fighters. B-17s had more success in March 1943 during the Battle of the Bismarck Sea. Bombing from medium altitude rather than high, they sank three Japanese ships. Despite this victory, the B-17 was not as effective in the Pacific and the USAAF transitioned aircrews to other types by mid-1943. During the course of World War II, the USAAF lost around 4,750 B-17s in combat, nearly a third of all built. USAAF B-17 inventory peaked in August 1944 at 4,574 aircraft. In the war over Europe, B-17s dropped 640,036 tons of bombs on enemy targets. B-17 Flying Fortress- Final Years: With the end of the war, the USAAF declared the B-17 obsolete and the majority of the surviving aircraft were returned to the United States and scrapped. Some aircraft were retained for search and rescue operations as well as photo reconnaissance platforms into the early 1950s. Other aircraft were transferred to the U.S. Navy and redesignated PB-1. Several PB-1s were fitted with the APS-20 search radar and used as antisubmarine warfare and early warning aircraft with designation PB-1W. These aircraft were phased out in 1955. The U.S. Coast Guard also utilized the B-17 after the war for iceberg patrols and search and rescue missions. Other retired B-17s saw later service in civilian uses such as aerial spraying and fire fighting. During its career, the B-17 saw active duty with numerous nations including the Soviet Union, Brazil, France, Israel, Portugal, and Colombia. How the religion help maya to fight for gender equality in society in Essay
How the religion help maya to fight for gender equality in society in america - Essay Example It must contribute to love and understanding amongst the humankind and between different races. Religious teachings made her appreciate the beauty and goodness of things. She shaped into an idealistic individual, happy always, notwithstanding the adverse circumstances the black community was placed in. She took it as a challenge. Maya belonged to the black race and the appearance of members of the black race, was not good. On these counts, they were always subject to prejudice. To overcome this problem Maya built her self-esteem and religious teachings were a great solace to her in situations over she had no control. But she challenged the vicissitudes of life ably. She had to endure the worst experience a young girl can think ofââ¬âbeing raped! Though this incident put a lot of limitations on her behavior, religion provided her the strength to endure the ultimate humiliation. How religion has indirect influences, on the psyche of the black people? Black people feel better about their inferiority and think that it is the God-given gift to them. They conclude that they are more loved by God. How they challenge their difficulties that try to corner them from all ends! This self-righteousness based on the foundation of religious principles provided lots of internal strength to Maya. The portrayal of her life has been hailed as the biblical study in life in the midst of death. Notwithstanding her dastardly experience of rape, she maintained a luminous dignity about her life and such poise is possible for in individual with strong religious/spiritual beliefs. She has a comprehensive sense of life, again a quality of a doted and spiritual human being. The theme of the book is the quest for the black child seeking love by the adult, which normally are the parents. But destiny denied that part of love to Maya, being separated from her parents. The

None - Essay Example his brother. Gothic literature is used to bring about an atmosphere of gloom and terror with an aim of passing messages to the reader. To begin with, it is set in out-of-date times and uses mysterious, dark and evil tone to pass the message. All the gothic characteristics in literature come together to give emphasis to the sagacity of evil. Most writers utilize Epiphany. It bring about a moment in which one sees something in a different perspective. It is triggered by a new piece of information that is crucial to the audience. This characteristic plays a significant role in literature to draw the attention of readers and the interest to know what happens in the piece (Bell, 2087). Bildungsroman is a piece of literature that narrates development of a youthful character this person matures in the process. It depicts the changes that go through an individual as they grow to adulthood. Whitman brought about a new orientation in the American poetry. Free verse poetry did not exist in the industry yet. In fact, in the 19th-century poetry had to be rhymed, and anything that was to the contrary was regarded to be a normal personââ¬â¢s gobbly-gook. However, Whitman changed that notion in the American society; he made people believe that a poet did not have to elevate him or herself above the commoners. Above all, a poet did not have to identify himself or herself with Europe, but be an American. Whitmanââ¬â¢s was sceptical of religion, he believes that all religions were equal, and none of the religions was superior to the other. Despite the fact that he was born a quark, he did not live to be a quark in his adulthood He appreciated the old accounts of all religions like the Bible, and genealogies to be true without any exception. Despite the fact that he accepted all, he believed in none of them ( Luzi ,115). Dickinson rarely used titles in her poems since she believed that they were just customary. She argued that a title is not the only way

Home Schooling: Advantages and Disadvantages
Home Schooling: Advantages and Disadvantages Introduction Home schooling refers to the concept of giving the kids a formal education without sending them to schools and teaching them within the comfort of the home. It involves making a few adjustments and the teacher in home schooling, whether it is a parent or external help must be aware of all the advancements in the field of education to ensure that the children who are being home schooled get proper education to place them well in the society. Another consideration would be the adaptability of the children to the societal norms particularly when they are confined to the comfort of the home and peer interaction may be hindered. The various pros and cons are discussed in this report. Pros of home schooling While the concept of home schooling is relatively new as compared to the traditional context, there are many studies which prove that homes schooled children score higher in their SATs than their counterparts from public schools. In fact, the Ivy-league colleges have started opening up their doors to these home-schooled children as they realise their value. Home schooling provides children with a flexible schedule to learn and can be tailor-made to fit the learning pace of the child. Home schooling for children with special needs is beneficial as the child can learn in a comfortable and known environment and thus the focus shifts from the anxiety of social interaction to the process of learning in the younger stage of life when the child can absorb the most knowledge. However, home schooling is not just for kids with special needs. Other children can also benefit from it. Home schooling allows better control over the childââ¬â¢s time, thus freeing them up for cultivating other hobbies like music, dance, writing and sports. It allows the child to break free of the compulsion of assignments and allows for more experiential learning. The child can have access to the learning material through all areas of the home and thus experience freedom in gaining theoretical and practical knowledge. Many schools do not make children ready for the real world, they just follow a set textbook. However, with home schooling and with the technology bringing us vast amount of information on demand at the click of a button further facilitates this process. This freely available information and the vast array of online courses designed specially for the child allows to bring down the cost of education while simultaneously increasing the quality of education. Home schooling also affords for bringing in knowledge about religion, family history and the likes to the children which may not be offered as courses in many schools. Home schooling also caters to the parentsââ¬â¢ wish to be able to supervise the childââ¬â¢s learning process more closely, understand the strengths and weaknesses of the child, and develop the child in their own specific way. Home schooling retains the natural curiosity of the child to the process of learning and gets rid of the compulsions laid down by schools. The child has freedom to choose what he likes and thus home schooling keeps the kids engaged. The control over the childââ¬â¢s schedule also allows the family to take travel trips together at most times of the year to complement the childââ¬â¢s learning about separate cultures and thus raises more tolerant and well-informed individuals. The main benefit about home schooling is the the one to one student teacher ratio ensures that the child has attention trained towards him all the time. This situation is not possible in public schools and the needs of the child often go ignored. Home schooling also protects the children from bullies, teenage peer pressure, unhealthy competition. It is also beneficial in the case of teenage girls who are prone to worry about fitting in with the rest of the people and following trends and fashion. This takes away their attention from the main element of learning. Home schooling also benefits the families which have to keep relocating very often due to work or otherwise. The kids may face problems with moving around very often and home schooling gives them a buffer against this. This brings in more stability to the learning process of the children. Home schooling also saves time for the children. With focused learning, the children can accomplish more in the same time while the school curriculum tends to go at a slower pace to accommodate all the children in the classroom. Also, not having to adhere to rigid timings of waking up and rushing to school is a positive. The children feel more at ease while not having to be burdened with unnecessary written work and can focus on developing their other interests. It is no surprise to know that children learn the most from the people they are surrounded with. A child may talk to his classmate in school and learn to be around people but they may pick up values which are not desirable to their parents, religion or culture. To prevent such a conflict the kids can be homeschooled. Social interaction for kids arranged through hobby classes will ensure their fast academic absorption and also satiate the need for social interaction. The kids who are homeschooled also generally interact with c hildren from a much wider age group, thus instilling maturity and new thought processes, whereas the schoolgoing kids usually interact with people from their same age group. This leads to a holistic development of children. Cons of home schooling: While home schooling has a many merits it also entails certain downsides. To start with, the home schooling model of learning means that the kids are home with their parents most of the times. This may cause the parent child relations to get strained as they are together most of the time. Also, parents may not find adequate time for teaching the child all that should be taught and the process of learning may develop gaps. The child then grows up with certain beliefs which may not be true or may be partially correct. Such a world view is damaging to the childââ¬â¢s psyche in the future. In many cases, when the parents are too rigid about the material they should use or the course they should follow, they may miss out on incorporating the recent trends in the field and hence limit the knowledge that the child gains from home schooling. Absence of a formal curriculum may also lead to unorganized learning. These formal curricula at schools are developed by professionals who are train ed in the field and understand the child needs and psychology on a wider scale. Ignorant parents will deprive their children of the benefit they may receive when trained with such material. Another matter of concern with home schooling may be that the childââ¬â¢s education may not receive the legal and societal acceptance it deserves. People tend to look at homeschooled children as lacking social skills and the kids may not get a recognition for their education while applying to college for further formal education. It may become difficult for the child to find acceptance in these cases, hurting their chances of succeeding. The homeschooled kids may also not benefit from healthy competition which inspires them to break their limits and achieve success to their maximum potential. Also, learning in schools gives them collective knowledge. The children learn from their peers and it shapes their ideas and personality. Home schooling entails being around the same set of people though the major part of their day and hence the skill of thinking from different perspectives may get minimised and opinions may become biased as the children tend to carry forward the beliefs of t heir parents and tutors. This can lead to a narrow mindset. Home schooling may also mean that children can miss out on sports events with their peers. Although they may still be a part of sporting activities, they miss out on a competitive sporting events where they get to forge strong bonds with their peers. These kids may also miss out on handling high pressure situations, surprise quizzes and other such events which leads to their emotional development. Not learning to properly interact in a group can result in behavioural and social issues. They might face problems following the laid down norms as they have been exposed to an environment wherein they are free to act as they want. They may have issues with sharing, may demand personal attention from people, and may become distant. Children may even dread participating in social events and would rather stay in the comfort of their home. Parental overinvestment in the child can cause them to fret over the childââ¬â¢s actions, decisions and behaviours and this type of helicopter parenting may lead to the the children not becoming fully independent. The parents have to be very cautious that their kids stay free to choose for themselves in this environment. Children going to schools share common experiences with their peers. School gives a chance for field trips, proms, shared projects which teach the child to trust others and understand their emotions. These common experiences become a way for children to form lifelong friendships. While it may be possible to share experiences with a sibling, knowing and interacting with people from the other cultures always benefits by broadening a childââ¬â¢s mindset. Experience from someone who was home schooled: Two cousins of mine were home schooled, not just through school but also through college. The involvement of parents was also very high along with a tutor employed to formally teach them the curriculum. When they grew up, they were imparted working knowledge by their father who is a businessman. This gave them practical knowledge in the field and also exposed them to interacting with business partners. The kids were also taken to participate in various treks and went camping with other kids their age. The home schooling provided them with undivided attention and excellent theoretical knowledge which was then supplemented with occupational skills in their free time. The legal issues of their education not being recognised were overcome with correspondence examinations and online courses. These certifications further gave them a chance for organized learning and got them the recognition for their knowledge. The absence of peer learning was never felt to be too huge as they interacted w ith the neighbourhood children. Today, they are both very well placed in the society and doing very well in their chosen areas. Home schooling also gave them freedom to pursue unconventional subjects and not be rigid about subjects they wanted to learn. This has broadened their horizons and the vast amount of knowledge they gained about diverse topics is colouring their decisions today, which turn out to be as sound as anyone who has had a formal education through the traditional channels. Conclusion: While home schooling has both pros and cons for children, it should be deliberated upon by parents whether they have the appropriate means and methods to give their children a comprehensive education at home or if the children need to go to school where they can be taught by a trained faculty. All the options available must be weighed in before jumping into any decision. Even if the children go to school, it is necessary for parents to take adequate interest in their learning and development to ensure that they are on the right path and are learning the right things in the right way. The Appeal Of The Mccain Feinstein Amendment - 935 Words
The appeal of the McCain-Feinstein amendment is its comparatively restrictive nature. In the words of constitutional law professor, David Cole, with particular reference to the past actions of the Bush administration, ââ¬Ëthe new legislation seems designed to prevent future administrations from interpreting existing laws to permit what they were plainly designed to prohibitââ¬â¢ (Cole, D 2015). In other words, the amendment approaches the problem from a different perspective in contrast to previous prohibitions. Rather than expressing a broad prohibition, it restricts interrogators to a definitive list of approved techniques (Feinstein, D 2015). This approach, thus, essentially avoids the ambiguity that has become an enduring quality of international human rights law in relation to torture (Cole, D 2015; Levinson, S 2015, pp. 2017-2018). In succinct terms, if a technique is not authorised, it is affirmatively prohibited. To this avail, in stark contrast with its predecessors, this legislation may yet prove to be instrumental in the prevention of torture. In spite of its acclaimed innovation, critics call attention to the fact that, likewise, the McCain-Feinstein amendment cannot escape the ââ¬Ëdefinition debateââ¬â¢ that plagues the discourse surrounding torture. In reference to this, a proponent of this thesis may advance the case of Appendix M. Whereby, under the circumstance, Appendix M could be conceivably read as permitting ââ¬Ëtorture liteââ¬â¢. Jenna Erickson BIBL 104-D13 04/17/2015 Old Testament Bible Dictionary Project: Exodus/Moses/Sinai Exodus: Exodus is the second book of five in the Pentateuch or Torah of the Old Testament. It is also the second book in the Hebrew Bible, and is known as Vââ¬â¢elleh Shemoth, while in the Greek Bible it is known as Exodus, meaning ââ¬Å"departureâ⬠or ââ¬Å"outgoingâ⬠. Moses is believed to be the author of Exodus, and it was most likely written during the forty years of wandering in the wilderness, between 1451 and 1491 BC. Then the Lord said to Moses, ââ¬Å"Write this as a memorial in a book and recite it in the ears of Joshua, that I will utterly blot out the memory of Amalek from under heavenâ⬠(Exodus 17:14). Along with the Ten Commandments Moses is said to be the author of the five books of the Pentateuch or Torah. Sinai: Currently, it is believed by most that Mount Sinai is located in a collection of peaks that are sometimes called the Holy Mountain peaks. This cluster of peaks include; Jebel Musa (7,370 ft.), Mount Catherine (8,550 ft.) and Ras Sufsafeh (6,540 ft.). Sinai is actually known by many other names, including; Mount Sinai, Mount Horeb, Mountain of God, Mountain of Moses, or the current name Jebel Musa. The mountain is said to be part of the Sinai Peninsula, and located between Arabia and Egypt. A Jewish historian named, Josephus wrote, Moses went up to a mountain that lay between Egypt and Arabia, which was called Sinai. The significance of this mountain is that this is where God, chose to speak to Moses. Both through the burning bush; to call Moses to lead the Israelites out of Egypt and through Moses to write the Ten Commandments upon two stone tablets. There are of course debates as to where the true Mount Sinai is located some of the arguments include; One being far northeast of Jebel Musa near the Gulf of Aqabam, with another being far north of Jebel Musa because of the battle of the Amalekites. Galatians 4:25 also says, ââ¬Å"Now Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia; she corresponds to the present Jerusalem, for she is in slavery with her childrenâ⬠. It is also debated

Should the west help spread democracy Essay Example For Students
Should the west help spread democracy? Essay These points illustrate that whilst there are a great many potential benefits from a democratised world, there exist some potential issues that must be successfully addressed for the citizens of both newly democratised and Western states to benefit. It is both inevitable and important to question the morality of one state intervening in the internal affairs of another. The morality of any venture is determined both by the principles it creates or destroys and by the contingencies of circumstances. 7 There are three moral issues concerning the promotion of democracy in undemocratic states. Firstly, one of the key principles in justifying intervention in another states internal affairs is that it must be in the interest of the citizens of that state, not in the self-interest of the intervener. Adequately satisfying such a criteria is extremely difficult but critical for the long-term success of any global campaign for the promotion of democracy. Secondly, as democracy promotion inevitably involves intervention in the domestic affairs of another state on some level, important moral questions regarding the international system in which such intervention takes place arise. Thirdly, promoting and in some cases imposing a political system on a society of different, if not unknown, cultural and societal values has many moral implications on a more specific, domestic level. For a state to have any claim to legitimately intervening in the internal affairs of another state, it must prove that it is not motivated by self-interest. However, to quote Thompson no social action can be completely free of the taint of egotism which claims for the actor more than is his due. 8 Marx similarly concluded that all values camouflage underlying interests. 9In reality, Stewart summarises the work of Cox, Ikenberry and Inogouchy by writing that US policy is not driven by moral impulse but by economic imperatives of transnational capitalists who seek to reconsolidate their hegemony over the global economy. The most effective way for the West to demonstrate a genuine benevolence in promoting democracy would be to maintain consistency in its policies. This is to say that the West cannot intervene in an authoritarian state under which its interests are threatened whilst ignoring the one that promotes them. However, it is widely held that democracies are unable to maintain consistent foreign policies. Waltz cites four key reasons for this; democracies prefer easy solutions with immediate benefits, foreign policy is decided by internal pressures unrelated to the international system, legislative attention to foreign policy is sporadic and disruptive and finally foreign policy is dominated by unpredictable and uniformed public opinion, often over-riding experienced decision makers. 10 The resulting inconsistencies damage not only moral legitimacy but also the practical abilities of the West to promote democracy. A second and important part of maintaining consistency of the Wests democratic message would be the democratisation of certain international institutions such as the IMF and World Bank. Such institutions potentially hold a very important role in the democratisation of authoritarian states but until they are seen to not solely represent Western interests, their moral standing, as well as chances of practical success will be damaged. In an international political system founded on equality between independent sovereign states, any state that intervenes in the internal affairs of another subverts the legal and institutional framework from which its own survival depends. Similarly, when intervention on the behalf of democracy by the West involves some kind of duress (physical, political or economic), it is often neither legal nor democratic in its execution. Therefore, there must be more fundamental reasoning by the West than the simple assertion that democracy is best for everyone because it works for us because, as the historian Dicey put it, men come easily to believe that arrangements agreeable to themselves are beneficial others. 11 This requires some fundamental change in the conception of international society that in turn requires a consensus among states and people to gain legitimacy. To quote Bull, demands for world justice are therefore demands for the transformation of the system and society of states, and are inherently revolutionary. 12 Whilst there is no universal morality regarding international relations a more popular consensus is emerging regarding fundamental human rights. It is indeed the growing inability of many weaker states to provide or protect such rights that is put forward as a legitimate justification for international intervention on behalf of democracy and has, since the early 1990s, started winning the battle against sovereignty as the sacred fundamental of international society. 13 Essentially, Western promotion of democracy would force a shift in the emphasis of international relations from order to justice, justice being the realisation of universal human liberty. As there is no consensus as to what constitutes justice, conflict will arise between the pursuit of such justice and international order. However, calls for justice the promotion of democracy and the preservation of international order do not have to be mutually exclusive. Bull writes, there is overwhelming evidence of a consensus in international society as a whole in favour of a change held to be just, especially if the consensus embraces all great powers, the change may take place without causing other than a local and temporary disorder. 14 Such a consensus does not exist. Authoritarian states will not agree to the removal of their power. Furthemore, although it is argued that the world is currently uni-polar, and that the only superpower, the US, certainly supports the promotion of democracy (at least publicly), other major powers such as China and Russia would not agree to the required change in international order. There is not even uniform consensus within states that publicly support the promotion of democracy. Realists argue that foreign policy cannot be founded on values; the West should not promote democracy as a matter of principle, but policy must instead be dictated solely by interests. Theorists such as Niebuhr and Schlesinger argue that a foreign policy based on morality is inadvisable for two reasons. Firstly, they argue that the state cannot be bound by the same moral rules as the individual. As Schlesinger writes governments are not individuals. They are not principles but agents. They are trustees for the happiness and interests of others, and so to risk any entity held for others is negligent. 15 The second reason, articulated by Niebuhr argues that any moral basis will be resented by others; We are not a sanctified nation and must not assume that all our actions are dictated by considerations of disinterested justice. If we fall into this error the natural resentments against our power will be compounded with resentments against our pretensions of superior virtue. 16 Other realists such as Kennan simply believe that a foreign policy based on moral values does not represent the interests (principally security) of any nation, particularly the West, and so should not be pursued. Therefore, it can be said that realists do not believe the West should promote democracy as they do not believe in a foreign policy based on moral principles. Democracy promotion does not represent Western interests. Criticism of such an outlook lies in the realist view of interest being primarily that of security. As discussed before, the democratic peace theory offers the possibility of increased security for all nations in a democratised world. Realists also overlook the other long-run economic and cultural benefits of democracy in considering Western interests. Democracy In Athens EssayThe less control the state has over the economy, the greater the ability of private economic enterprises to restrain the state. The third area identified by Youngs is what he terms the good governance agenda. This refers to increasing the efficiency, transparency and accountability of the state in order to combat corruption and clientelism. Such reforms would, by their own success, promote a strengthened legal framework and modernised administration. 26 Doyle and Art hold similar views in what Doyle sees as necessary expansionist democracy promotion. Doyle holds that democracy is best promoted through inspiration, instigation and intervention. Inspiration is the encouraging of local populations to struggle for their liberty, using such methods as the promotion of a cosmopolitan civil society. Instigation involves institutional and economic reform. Intervention, Doyle writes, is legitimate when widespread dissatisfaction with an authoritarian regime is demonstrated by a population or when human rights are being systematically violated. 27 This last point is important when, as discussed above, force was ruled out as a method of democracy promotion. Force cannot be used to promote democracy in itself. However, it is the view of many writers that when force is necessary for other reasons, it is legitimate and astute to promote and build democracy through non-violent means on the back of violent conflict with an authoritarian state. One final point is that in promoting democracy, the promoter must recognise a wide range of political systems, all based on democracy, but tailored to the cultural, economic and popular needs of each individual state. This requires the recognition of social democracy as well as liberal democracy as a legitimate form of government. George W. Bush paid at least lip service to this demand in his inauguration speech of 20th January 2005, the institutions that arise may reflect customs and traditions very different from our own. America will not impose our own style of government on the unwilling. Our goal instead is to help others find their own voice, attain their own freedom, and make their own way. 28 To quote Machiavelli, There is nothing more difficult than to take the lead in the introduction of a new order of things. 29 Democracy is the most appropriate form of government for a majority of people, societies and cultures. Inevitably, certain groups or individuals will spurn it and some will even fight against it and its imposition. International society, should such a thing exist, is likely to benefit from a more peaceful and ordered environment, where the respect for human, political and economic rights is more widespread. In addition, the spread of democracy should stimulate extra growth in the global economy. For these reasons democracy is a political system that should be encouraged and actively promoted by existing democracies, notably the West. However, advocating Western promotion of democracy requires strict qualification because, as Art writes, the aim of spreading democracy around the globe can too easily become a licence for indiscriminate and unending US military interventions in the internal affairs of others. 30 Firstly, the actions and message of the West must be consistent and carried out with humility. This means promoting democracy in all authoritarian states with equal vigour, regardless of Western interests in and relationships with such states and the democratic reform of international institutions biased towards Western economic or political power. Secondly, democracy must not be promoted through punitive measures. The use of punitive measures undermines democracies moral appeal but is above all counter-productive violence, covert interference and economic punishment all work against the successful establishment of democratic will and institutions in a state. The West most also accept that different states require different political systems social democracy must be considered equally with liberal democracy. Democracy and freedom are desirable ends for humanity. However, as values they are not alone and until every state is democratic they will compete against others such as peace, security and stability. Therefore, in the promotion of democracy, the West must ensure that the means must be morally justifiable regardless of the ends and proportionate to the benefits gained by their employment. Business Email Salutations to a Group [Updated 2018]
Business Email Salutations to a Group [Updated 2018] I wrote about correct salutations for business letters and business email, prompting a few clients to ask about which salutations work well for a business email to a group. Small Group Salutations If the group is small enough ââ¬â five or less ââ¬â the very best salutation is to use recipientsââ¬â¢ names. This also indicates the message is relevant for all of them. Dear Carmen, Anita, Sean, James, and Roland: Note: using Dear [title, last name] or [first name] followed by a colon is the preferred salutation for all business salutations in email for formal communication when communicating outside your company on first contact. If your subject is a more personal business issue, such as group congratulations, condolences or thanks, use Dear [title, last name] or [first name] followed by a comma. If you know your recipients very well, you are all in the same company, the subject is light, and your company culture informal, you can also use Hello or Hi [first name], followed by a comma. When in doubt about formality, opt for Dear [title, last name] or [first name] and a colon. Group Salutations to a Team If all your recipients belong to the same group, use the group name: Dear Sales Team: Dear Profile Committee: AcknowledgementGroup Salutations Sometimes, endearing or encouraging group salutations work well, but use discretion with this approach: Dear Marketing Mavens: (To a marketing group, in a message announcing a new contract, which compliments their ability and skills that earned the contract.) Dear Road Warriors: (To a sales group that had been traveling non-stop for the past month, with a message announcing the sales results. This salutation works because it sincerely acknowledges their hard work.) Dear Sales Dudes: (Be judicious using personalized group salutations. A sales rep shared this salutation with me recently, which his sales manager uses for all group messages to the sales team. He told me he ââ¬Å"cringesâ⬠every time he sees this, which proves the importance of a good salutation. We really can lose a reader at hello.) Group Salutations for Positions If your recipients are in various positions or groups: Dear Colleagues: Dear Coworkers: Ladies: (if all the recipients are women) Gentlemen: (if all the recipients are men) Neutral, Classic Group Salutations Always Work ââ¬Å"Greetingsâ⬠as a group salutation is neutral, succinct and not too casual, so always a good choice: Greetings: Greetings All: Summer Greetings: (Suitable for a seasonal group announcement message.) For more informal business writing, these salutations are warm and engaging: Hello, everyone: Hi Team, Dear Friends:
