Jenna Erickson BIBL 104-D13 04/17/2015 Old Testament Bible Dictionary Project: Exodus/Moses/Sinai Exodus: Exodus is the second book of five in the Pentateuch or Torah of the Old Testament. It is also the second book in the Hebrew Bible, and is known as V’elleh Shemoth, while in the Greek Bible it is known as Exodus, meaning â€Å"departure† or â€Å"outgoing†. Moses is believed to be the author of Exodus, and it was most likely written during the forty years of wandering in the wilderness, between 1451 and 1491 BC. Then the Lord said to Moses, â€Å"Write this as a memorial in a book and recite it in the ears of Joshua, that I will utterly blot out the memory of Amalek from under heaven† (Exodus 17:14). Along with the Ten Commandments Moses is said to be the author of the five books of the Pentateuch or Torah. Sinai: Currently, it is believed by most that Mount Sinai is located in a collection of peaks that are sometimes called the Holy Mountain peaks. This cluster of peaks include; Jebel Musa (7,370 ft.), Mount Catherine (8,550 ft.) and Ras Sufsafeh (6,540 ft.). Sinai is actually known by many other names, including; Mount Sinai, Mount Horeb, Mountain of God, Mountain of Moses, or the current name Jebel Musa. The mountain is said to be part of the Sinai Peninsula, and located between Arabia and Egypt. A Jewish historian named, Josephus wrote, Moses went up to a mountain that lay between Egypt and Arabia, which was called Sinai. The significance of this mountain is that this is where God, chose to speak to Moses. Both through the burning bush; to call Moses to lead the Israelites out of Egypt and through Moses to write the Ten Commandments upon two stone tablets. There are of course debates as to where the true Mount Sinai is located some of the arguments include; One being far northeast of Jebel Musa near the Gulf of Aqabam, with another being far north of Jebel Musa because of the battle of the Amalekites. Galatians 4:25 also says, â€Å"Now Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia; she corresponds to the present Jerusalem, for she is in slavery with her children†. It is also debated

Essay These points illustrate that whilst there are a great many potential benefits from a democratised world, there exist some potential issues that must be successfully addressed for the citizens of both newly democratised and Western states to benefit. It is both inevitable and important to question the morality of one state intervening in the internal affairs of another. The morality of any venture is determined both by the principles it creates or destroys and by the contingencies of circumstances. 7 There are three moral issues concerning the promotion of democracy in undemocratic states. Firstly, one of the key principles in justifying intervention in another states internal affairs is that it must be in the interest of the citizens of that state, not in the self-interest of the intervener. Adequately satisfying such a criteria is extremely difficult but critical for the long-term success of any global campaign for the promotion of democracy. Secondly, as democracy promotion inevitably involves intervention in the domestic affairs of another state on some level, important moral questions regarding the international system in which such intervention takes place arise. Thirdly, promoting and in some cases imposing a political system on a society of different, if not unknown, cultural and societal values has many moral implications on a more specific, domestic level. For a state to have any claim to legitimately intervening in the internal affairs of another state, it must prove that it is not motivated by self-interest. However, to quote Thompson no social action can be completely free of the taint of egotism which claims for the actor more than is his due. 8 Marx similarly concluded that all values camouflage underlying interests. 9In reality, Stewart summarises the work of Cox, Ikenberry and Inogouchy by writing that US policy is not driven by moral impulse but by economic imperatives of transnational capitalists who seek to reconsolidate their hegemony over the global economy. The most effective way for the West to demonstrate a genuine benevolence in promoting democracy would be to maintain consistency in its policies. This is to say that the West cannot intervene in an authoritarian state under which its interests are threatened whilst ignoring the one that promotes them. However, it is widely held that democracies are unable to maintain consistent foreign policies. Waltz cites four key reasons for this; democracies prefer easy solutions with immediate benefits, foreign policy is decided by internal pressures unrelated to the international system, legislative attention to foreign policy is sporadic and disruptive and finally foreign policy is dominated by unpredictable and uniformed public opinion, often over-riding experienced decision makers. 10 The resulting inconsistencies damage not only moral legitimacy but also the practical abilities of the West to promote democracy. A second and important part of maintaining consistency of the Wests democratic message would be the democratisation of certain international institutions such as the IMF and World Bank. Such institutions potentially hold a very important role in the democratisation of authoritarian states but until they are seen to not solely represent Western interests, their moral standing, as well as chances of practical success will be damaged. In an international political system founded on equality between independent sovereign states, any state that intervenes in the internal affairs of another subverts the legal and institutional framework from which its own survival depends. Similarly, when intervention on the behalf of democracy by the West involves some kind of duress (physical, political or economic), it is often neither legal nor democratic in its execution. Therefore, there must be more fundamental reasoning by the West than the simple assertion that democracy is best for everyone because it works for us because, as the historian Dicey put it, men come easily to believe that arrangements agreeable to themselves are beneficial others. 11 This requires some fundamental change in the conception of international society that in turn requires a consensus among states and people to gain legitimacy. To quote Bull, demands for world justice are therefore demands for the transformation of the system and society of states, and are inherently revolutionary. 12 Whilst there is no universal morality regarding international relations a more popular consensus is emerging regarding fundamental human rights. It is indeed the growing inability of many weaker states to provide or protect such rights that is put forward as a legitimate justification for international intervention on behalf of democracy and has, since the early 1990s, started winning the battle against sovereignty as the sacred fundamental of international society. 13 Essentially, Western promotion of democracy would force a shift in the emphasis of international relations from order to justice, justice being the realisation of universal human liberty. As there is no consensus as to what constitutes justice, conflict will arise between the pursuit of such justice and international order. However, calls for justice the promotion of democracy and the preservation of international order do not have to be mutually exclusive. Bull writes, there is overwhelming evidence of a consensus in international society as a whole in favour of a change held to be just, especially if the consensus embraces all great powers, the change may take place without causing other than a local and temporary disorder. 14 Such a consensus does not exist. Authoritarian states will not agree to the removal of their power. Furthemore, although it is argued that the world is currently uni-polar, and that the only superpower, the US, certainly supports the promotion of democracy (at least publicly), other major powers such as China and Russia would not agree to the required change in international order. There is not even uniform consensus within states that publicly support the promotion of democracy. Realists argue that foreign policy cannot be founded on values; the West should not promote democracy as a matter of principle, but policy must instead be dictated solely by interests. Theorists such as Niebuhr and Schlesinger argue that a foreign policy based on morality is inadvisable for two reasons. Firstly, they argue that the state cannot be bound by the same moral rules as the individual. As Schlesinger writes governments are not individuals. They are not principles but agents. They are trustees for the happiness and interests of others, and so to risk any entity held for others is negligent. 15 The second reason, articulated by Niebuhr argues that any moral basis will be resented by others; We are not a sanctified nation and must not assume that all our actions are dictated by considerations of disinterested justice. If we fall into this error the natural resentments against our power will be compounded with resentments against our pretensions of superior virtue. 16 Other realists such as Kennan simply believe that a foreign policy based on moral values does not represent the interests (principally security) of any nation, particularly the West, and so should not be pursued. Therefore, it can be said that realists do not believe the West should promote democracy as they do not believe in a foreign policy based on moral principles. Democracy promotion does not represent Western interests. Criticism of such an outlook lies in the realist view of interest being primarily that of security. As discussed before, the democratic peace theory offers the possibility of increased security for all nations in a democratised world. Realists also overlook the other long-run economic and cultural benefits of democracy in considering Western interests. Democracy In Athens EssayThe less control the state has over the economy, the greater the ability of private economic enterprises to restrain the state. The third area identified by Youngs is what he terms the good governance agenda. This refers to increasing the efficiency, transparency and accountability of the state in order to combat corruption and clientelism. Such reforms would, by their own success, promote a strengthened legal framework and modernised administration. 26 Doyle and Art hold similar views in what Doyle sees as necessary expansionist democracy promotion. Doyle holds that democracy is best promoted through inspiration, instigation and intervention. Inspiration is the encouraging of local populations to struggle for their liberty, using such methods as the promotion of a cosmopolitan civil society. Instigation involves institutional and economic reform. Intervention, Doyle writes, is legitimate when widespread dissatisfaction with an authoritarian regime is demonstrated by a population or when human rights are being systematically violated. 27 This last point is important when, as discussed above, force was ruled out as a method of democracy promotion. Force cannot be used to promote democracy in itself. However, it is the view of many writers that when force is necessary for other reasons, it is legitimate and astute to promote and build democracy through non-violent means on the back of violent conflict with an authoritarian state. One final point is that in promoting democracy, the promoter must recognise a wide range of political systems, all based on democracy, but tailored to the cultural, economic and popular needs of each individual state. This requires the recognition of social democracy as well as liberal democracy as a legitimate form of government. George W. Bush paid at least lip service to this demand in his inauguration speech of 20th January 2005, the institutions that arise may reflect customs and traditions very different from our own. America will not impose our own style of government on the unwilling. Our goal instead is to help others find their own voice, attain their own freedom, and make their own way. 28 To quote Machiavelli, There is nothing more difficult than to take the lead in the introduction of a new order of things. 29 Democracy is the most appropriate form of government for a majority of people, societies and cultures. Inevitably, certain groups or individuals will spurn it and some will even fight against it and its imposition. International society, should such a thing exist, is likely to benefit from a more peaceful and ordered environment, where the respect for human, political and economic rights is more widespread. In addition, the spread of democracy should stimulate extra growth in the global economy. For these reasons democracy is a political system that should be encouraged and actively promoted by existing democracies, notably the West. However, advocating Western promotion of democracy requires strict qualification because, as Art writes, the aim of spreading democracy around the globe can too easily become a licence for indiscriminate and unending US military interventions in the internal affairs of others. 30 Firstly, the actions and message of the West must be consistent and carried out with humility. This means promoting democracy in all authoritarian states with equal vigour, regardless of Western interests in and relationships with such states and the democratic reform of international institutions biased towards Western economic or political power. Secondly, democracy must not be promoted through punitive measures. The use of punitive measures undermines democracies moral appeal but is above all counter-productive violence, covert interference and economic punishment all work against the successful establishment of democratic will and institutions in a state. The West most also accept that different states require different political systems social democracy must be considered equally with liberal democracy. Democracy and freedom are desirable ends for humanity. However, as values they are not alone and until every state is democratic they will compete against others such as peace, security and stability. Therefore, in the promotion of democracy, the West must ensure that the means must be morally justifiable regardless of the ends and proportionate to the benefits gained by their employment. This disproportion of wealth created an unstable economy. Before the Great Depression, the "roaring twenties" was an era during which the United States prospered tremendously. The nation's total income rose from $74.3 billion in 1923 to $89 billion in 1929. However, the rewards of the "Coolidge Prosperity" of the 1920's were not shared evenly among all Americans. In 1929, the top 0.1 percentage of Americans had a combined income equal to the bottom 42%. That same top 0.1 percentage of Americans in 1929 controlled 34% of all savings, while 80% of Americans had no savings at all. Automotive industry tycoon Henry Ford provides an example of the unequal distribution of wealth between the rich and the middle-class. Henry Ford reported a personal income of $14 million in the same year that the average personal income was $750. This poor distribution of income between the rich and the middle class grew throughout the 1920's. Abstract Approximately 11,000 spinal cord injuries involving Paraplegia are reported in the United States yearly. These injuries occur as a result of automobile and motorcycle accidents, falls, sporting accidents, and gunshot wounds; although, it is also caused by congenital conditions. When the spinal nerve signals below the level of the injury is partially cut off from the brain, this results in Paraplegia disability. This is an impairment of motor or sensory function of the lower extremities. The most affected areas of the spinal canal by Paraplegia are related directly either with the thoracic, lumbar, or sacral regions. Spinal Cord injuries are medical emergencies. Immediate treatment can reduce long-term effects. There are several effective techniques that can help minimize the impact of these injuries and could help paraplegic patients regain some movement of the joints, muscles, and extremities. These techniques extent and are not limited to: manual therapy, physical therapy, sport medicine rehabilitation, exercise training, technological stimulation, neurological studies, and emotional support. All these therapies along with the proper professional intervention can help paraplegic patients get back some sense of support that could lead to their future independency and self worthiness. PARAPLEGIA When a person suffers a spinal cord injury most of the neurological information travels from the spinal nerves below the level of injury all the way to the brain. Somehow these spinal nerves stop sending signals to the brain partially cutting off its main function resulting in Paraplegia. Swimming and aquatic exercises provide optimal conditions for paraplegic patients. The water eliminates the effects of gravity allowing weakened limbs to attain a greater range of motion. It also helps to support the body so there is less stress on the hips, knees, and spine. Exercises in the water increase muscle power and endurance which help mobilize joints and muscles. Therefore, swimming is definitely a good sport to practice that stimulates the health and wellbeing of people suffering from Paraplegia. â€Å"Being disabled should not mean being disqualified from having access to every aspect of life.† (Thompson). Paraplegics should have access to the developmental progress currently happening in the field. Last but not least, another alternative to treat Paraplegia is the Ware K. Conclusion Scientists are currently using all the available resources in order to fight and possibly cure Paraplegia. Virginity was especially emphasized in the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus: only virgins and men were allowed access and married or sexually active women were excluded under penalty of death. Artemis is commonly regarded as a fertility goddess, mostly because of the multitude of ‘breasts’ that cover her cult image (4). This essay will discuss three aspects of the Ancient Temple of Artemis, the style, the restoration of its architecture and its importance. The temple of Artemis was built around 550 BC and was the first temple to be entirely of marble and the largest temple ever built. The temple was financed by the wealthy king of Lydia and was designed by the Greek architect Chersiphron. Marshy ground was selected for the building site as a precaution against future earthquakes. The foundation was laid on a bed of packed charcoal and sheepskins, the column drums and architraves moved from the quarry, relates Vitruvius, by fitting them with large wheels and then, like rolling axles, having them pulled by oxen (5). It resembles the classical Greek temple: a stoic rectangular structure with mighty columns (6). The temple measured 350 by 180 feet and from the outside, its most striking feature was its more than 100 marble columns. Since it was built in the Ionic architectural style, the columns were decorated with sculptural reliefs at their bases and rosettes in their capitals (7). There were two rows of columns stretched across the front of the temple, standing about 21 feet apart and extending from the front to the back of the temple at 17 feet apart. The door in the pediment along with two windows was intended for Artemis own use (8). Inside the temple was the statue of Artemis herself, which was built from gold, silver, ebony and other stones. The temple brought in merchants, kings, and sightseers, many of donated jewellery and other treasures to Artemis and her temple. Its splendor also attracted many worshipers and pilgrims, strengthening the cult of Artemis (9). Since she was an influential figure, her fame went higher as soon as her temple was built. The Temple of Artemis was a very famous and attracted visitor from far and near. Its purpose was both a religious institution and market place. The market place itself had small models of the temple and its goddess Artemis for the fellow tourists as souvenirs to take with them. The columns at the front were decorated with intricate sculptures. It was built to honor Artemis as inside the temple was an inner room called the sanctuary that housed  a magnificent statue of the goddess. The temple was destroyed and rebuilt several times, each time it was built more impressively than the time before it. The first time it was destroyed was on the night of July 21, 356 BC, a man named Herostratus set fire to the temple in an attempt to immortalize his name (10). It caused the roof to cave in, the columns collapsed, and the statue of the goddess crashed to the ground. After the town created a law stating whoever mentioned his name would be put to death immediately. In the following two decades the temple was restored with the help of Alexander the Great. But then again in 262 AD, the temple was destroyed by the Goths and later swamped by floods, but still the residents of Ephesus vowed to rebuild it (11). However this time it was not rebuilt due to the high construction costs. A little later the temple began to lose its importance and many people were switching to Christianity and the town was completely isolated. There were attempts made to reconstruct the temple, but so far only a couple columns have been erected upon the remaining foundation.

Kevin Duffy is one of the first and only scientists to have ever been in close contact with the Mbuti. If an Mbuti tribesman does not want to be found, they simply won't be. The forest in which the Mbuti reside in are simply too dense and dangerous for humans not familiar with the area to enter. Without them he would simply be wandering aimlessly in the forest. It was very important for Kevin Duffy to win the respect of the tribe when he arrived. The Mbuti are one of the most fascinating of all the "uncivilized" peoples of the world. This tribe inhabits equatorial Africa near the city of Kisangani in Zaire in the Ituri rainforest. The Mbuti, being the smallest people on earth, live in the most inaccessible place on earth. An Mbuti tribe is almost impossible to find in such a dense forest. The tribe's men and women are only about four and a half foot tall yet they navigate though rich and dense forestry daily in the search for meat and fruit. The Mbuti greatly acknowledge their beloved forest as the supplier of all their worldly needs and possessions. The forest supplies them with food, clothing, shelter, and to them, affection. The Mbuti treat the forest as their parents and see themselves as it's children. They often sing to it in times joy and pray to the forest in times of remorse. Duffy becomes a "fly-on-the-wall" among this particular Mbuti clan. Not by spying on them, but becoming a friend, a very good friend. The Mbuti trusted him like a brother and invited him into their lives to share everything from the birth Mazero's new child to the death of Ndima, one of the tribes' elders. He was even allowed to film the Mbuti's famous elephant hunt. To achieve this kind of trust among an "alien" culture is a phenomenal feat. The elephant hunt was the first story that depicted the actual way that the Mbuti hunted and shared their shared their rewards from a hunt. The entire tribe set out in order to search for an elephant for a feast. All the males of the tribe, regardless of age left ... ...in that respect. Humans seem to always behave like humans no matter where they are in the world or what technologies they possess. The Mbuti are probably better than Americans in another aspect also. They all hunted together, but not only the hunters and their families got to eat. Families of all the surrounding tribes enjoyed a meal. In today's society, people walk the streets hungry while other live lavishly, eating until they are stuffed. If Americans were more like the Mbuti, this country would be a much better place. The Mbuti pygmies of the Ituri rainforest are a fascinating people. They need their forest for food, shelter, and protection from other peoples of the world. How the Mbuti managed to survive the conquests of the Spanish and the English is beyond our knowledge. Their dense, uncharted forest has kept them a secret to many people to this day. The Mbuti probably are the most unchanged people still living on earth. The American Honda Motor Company was established as a subsidiary by Honda in 1959. During the 1960's the type of motorcycles brought by Americans underwent a major change. Motorcycle registrations increased by over 800,000 in five years from 1960. In the early 60's the major competitors were Haley – Davidson of U. S. A, BSA, Triumph and Norton of the UK and Motto – Guzzi of Italy. Harley-Davidson had the largest market share with sales in 1959 totalling a6. 6 million dollars. Many of the motorcycles produced were large and bulky and this led to the image f the motorcycle rider as being one who wore a leather jacket and went The Boston Consulting Group ( BCG ) report was initiated by the British government to study the decline in British motorcycle companies around the world, especially in the USA where sales had dropped from 49% in 1959 to 9% in 1973. The two key factors the report identified was the market share loss and profitability declines an the scale economy disadvantages in technology, distribution, and manufacturing. The BCG report showed that success of the Japanese manufacturers started with the growth of their own domestic markets. The high production for omestic demand led to Honda experiencing economies of scale as the cost of producing motorbikes declined with the level of output. This provided Honda to achieve a highly competitive cost position which they used to penetrate into the US market. † The basic philosophy of the Japanese manufacture is that high volumes per model provide the potential for high productivity as a result of using capital intensive and highly automated techniques. Their marketing strategies are therefore directed towards developing these high model volumes, hence the careful attention that we have observed them giving to growth and market The report goes on to show how Honda built up engineering competencies through the innovation of Mr Honda. The company also moved away from other companies who relied upon distributors to sell their bikes when the company set up its headquarters in the west coast of America. The BCG found that the motorcycles available before Honda entered the market were for limited group of people such as the police, army etc. But Honda had a â€Å"policy of selling, not primarily to confirmed motorcyclists but rather to members of the general public who had never before given a second thought to a motorcycle†( SP p. 16 ). The small, lightweight Honda Supercub sold at under 250 dollars compared to the bigger American or British machines which were retailing at around 1000 to 1500 dollars. In 1960 Honda's research team comprised of around 700 designer and engineer staff compared to the 100 or so employed by their competitors showing the value which the company placed on innovation. Production per man-year was 159 units in 1962, a figure not reached by Harley-Davidson Honda was following a strategy of developing region by region. Over a period of four to five years they moved from the west coast of America o the east coast. The report showed the emphasis which Honda paid to advertising when the company spent heavily on the advertising theme † you meet the nicest people on a Honda† thereby disassociating themselves from the rowdy, hell's angels type of people. Essentially the BCG is portraying Honda as a firm dedicated to being a low cost producer, utilising its dominant position in Japan to force entry into the U. S market, redefining that market by putting up the nicest people image and exploiting its comparative advantage via Pascale tends to disagree on many points of the BCG report. The report uggests that there was a smooth entry into the U. S market which led to an instant success. Pascale argues that Honda entered the American market at the end of the motorcycle trade season showing their impotence to carry out research in the new market. As they entered the market at the wrong time sales were not as good as they should have been and any success was not going to be instantaneous. Pascale also criticises the assumption that Honda was superior to other competitors in productivity. He says that Honda was successful in Japan with productivity but circumstances indicate that the company was not superior. The lack of funding from the ministry of finance and the ploughing back of profits into inventory meant they had a tight budget to follow. The BCG report shows that Honda had a smooth policy of developing region by region, moving from the west to the east. Pascale response is that this is partly true but reminds that Hondas advertising was still in Los Angeles in 1963, four years after setting up their subsidiary. The report to the British government showed that Honda had a deliberate strategy of disassociating themselves from the hells angels type of people by following the nicest people advertisement policy. Pascale shows that this was not an intentional move since there were disputes within the company with the director of sales eventually persuading to management against their better judgement. The BCG report found Honda pushed into the U. S market with small lightweight motorbikes. However Pascale says this is again not true. He argues the intended strategy was one of promoting the larger 250cc and 350cc as Honda felt that this was what the market wanted since Americans liked all things large. The bikes were unreliable which led to the promotion of the supercubs. These bikes salvaged the reputation of the company. An dea which hardly came from an inspired idea but one of desperation. Overall Pascale gives the impression that it was through an incidental sequence of events which led to Honda gaining a strong hold in the U. Honda was an inventive genius with a large ego and a volatile temperament. His main concerns were not about the profitability of the ompany or its products, but rather to show his innovative ability by producing better engines. Fujisawa on the other hand thought about the financial section of the company and how to market the ideas. He often challenged Honda to come up with better engines. By specialising in their own abilities the two of them were able to pool together resources Another strength was the way the company utilised its market position. Strengths in design advantages and production methods meant they were able to increases sales in Japan even though there was no organisation within the company. Once there was a large enough demand for its products, mainly the supercub, Honda both in Japan and in America, moved from a sale on consignment basis to one that required cash on delivery. This seemed a very risky decision to make at the time but within three years they had changed the pattern within the motorcycle industry by shifting the power relationship from the dealer to the manufacturer. Mr Honda had cultivated a â€Å"success against all odds† culture into the company. This was tested when he sent two executives to the U. S with no strategy other than to see if they could sell something. The weaknesses within an organisation can become irrelevant if the strategy is strong and there is good leadership. An element of luck also helped Honda follow an emerging strategy. Restrictions placed on funds by the government for the U. S venture forced Honda to take an alternative route. If they had all the funds necessary they may well have gone through the normal distribution Honda entered the us market right at the end of the motorcycle trade season. When leaking oil and clutch problems occurred on their bikes it did not affect Honda as hard as it would have had they entered in the beginning of the season. It is this ability of an organisation to move ideas from the tom to the bottom and back again in continuos dialogue that the As a conclusion it is necessary to consider the theoretical side of Hondas strategy and see whether the company was in fact following a model. The first model is the Andrew's model. Andrew came up with the idea that there were two stages to corporate strategy, formulation and implementation. Formulation involved looking at the market, competitors and resources and formulating a corporate strategy which would be implemented throughout each process of the organisational structure. This model was also supported by Porter. This is how the BCG saw Honda, as a corporation, who had looked at the market, formulated a strategy to ope with the environment and competition pressures and implemented it, making all Hondas plans and activities deliberate. The second model known as the emergent strategy portrays a different image to the Andrews model and shows how Pascale viewed Honda. The model shows a realised strategy made up from a an intended strategy together with an emergent strategy which is not planned but emerges in relation to activities within the environment. Pascale seemed to think that in Hondas case a substantial proportion or the companies corporate strategy was emergent and less was actually intended strategy.
